Current Characters: Yuri Tsukikage
Character: Momotaros
Fandom: Kamen Rider Den-O
Character Notes:
History: Momotaros is what is known as an Imagin. Imagins are sort of like genies, in that they appear before people and ask them to tell their wish. Once an Imagin has granted a wish, they can use the person to travel to the past, where they can wreak havoc.
Momotaros ends up possessing a boy named Ryoutarou Nogami, while he’s being beaten up by some delinquents. Except Momotaros didn’t know one very important fact: Ryoutarou is what is known as a Singularity Point, which means he’s not affected by the memory alteration that occurs when the past is changed. It also means he’s destined to become Kamen Rider Den-O and battle the Imagins. He discovers this after he accidentally finds a time traveling train, known as Den-Liner. Thanks to this, he meets Hana, another Singular point, who explains what she can to him. On the train he also meets Naomi, the rather quirky girl who makes coffee for the passengers and Owner, the mysterious... well, owner of the train.
Though Momotaros isn’t happy about his situation, there is little he can do about it. Once an Imagin possesses a person, they’re stuck with them until they’ve granted said person’s wish. Also, if the host dies, so does the Imagin. Because of this, when Ryoutarou transforms into Den-O and isn’t able to fight, Momotaros helps him. Thanks to Momotaros taking control over Ryoutarou’s body, Den-O changes into Sword Form.
After the fight, Ryoutarou refuses to tell Momotaros his wish, telling him he needs to think about it. Since Momotaros cannot hold a physical form in the real world unless he possesses Ryoutarou, he’s forced to comply and remains on Den-Liner, which becomes Den-O’s base of operations, basically.
It soon becomes clear that just because he’s stuck, Momotaros has no intention of going along with everything. He possesses Ryoutarou’s body without his permission and uses it to get into fights and even help someone steal a lot of money. Ryoutarou decided he’s not putting up with that, so decides to fight the next Imagin by himself. Predictably, this doesn’t go well, as Ryoutarou sucks at fighting. Still, he endures and doesn’t allow Momotaros to jump in until the Imagin promises him to stop stealing and getting into fights... Plus, a very frustrated shout of “I’m sorry!” The enemy Imagin is easily defeated once Momo jumps into the fray.
It doesn’t take long before Momotaros isn’t the only guest to make use of Ryoutarou’s body. Over several episodes, three more Imagin join the Den-Liner crew. Urataros is the first, a lying turtle-themed Imagin who has no interest in destroying the past, but would rather use Ryoutarou to flirt with every woman he encounters. After that comes Kintaros, a large, sleepy bear-themed Imagin, who turns out to be an incredibly nice guy. The last is Ryuutaros, a childish, yet very dangerous, dragon-themed imaging who loves break-dancing, animals and, most of all, Ryoutarou’s sister.
One day Ryoutarou collapses from the strain of having four Imagin taking joyrides in his body. Ryoutarou is very quiet about this. Thanks to Hana, the Imagin start to think it’s their fault. Starting with Kintaros, they all get the idea to ask Ryoutarou to tell his wish so that he will be free of them.
Except Ryuutaros, who informs the others that the actual reason Ryoutarou collapsed was because he’d been training in secret, hoping to become stronger. Momotaros is not happy about this at all. When Ryoutarou goes to fight the episode’s Imagin and summons Momotaros, he doesn’t even pretend he’s trying. He tells Ryoutarou not to do sneaky things like that. After Ryoutarou promises him he’ll be honest in the future, Momotaros easily slays the Imagin.
It’s around this point that a rival appears, with an Imagin of his own; Yuuto, who seems to be the past version Ryoutarou’s sister’s fiance and his Imagin, Deneb. But that’s another story entirely and has little to do with Momotaros, so moving on.
Around this point the show prepares for the movie. Yuuto kidnaps Ryoutarou at varying points in time. Though it’s not clear why at the time, the movie reveals this is so the Imagins can all possess a version of Ryoutarou, allowing them to fight together, rather than just switching in.
This turns out to have unintended consequences. Time is tricky in the world of Den-O. It’s built entirely around people’s memories. Because Ryoutarou has no memory of the times Yuuto kidnapped him, he only remembers transforming into Den-O Sword Form. Because of this, all Imagin except for Momotaros start to disappear. Ryoutarou is saddened by this and tries to find a way around it, but fails. When he returns to Den-Liner, Momotaros is the only Imagin still there. He informs Ryoutarou that they’ve already disappeared. All that’s left is the sand that every Imagin is technically made of. Owner tells him that if he imagines something, the sand will remain in that form. Because Ryoutarou wants to stay connected to the others, the sand forms into a phone.
Of course, this is only episode 28 of 49, so obviously they don’t stay gone. During the fight with the Imagin of the episode, they’re suddenly interrupted by the phone Ryoutarou created actually ringing. Momo answers the phone and it turns out to be Urataros. He tells him to punch in a code and Momotaros obliges. When he does this, all the Imagin return and possess Ryoutarou at the same time, creating Den-O Climax Form. Once back on the Den-Liner, everyone celebrates. Momotaros leaves the compartment and goes to the hallway, surprisingly, crying. Here, he finds a sobbing Hana. When he tries to tell the other Imagin about it, Hana punches him out of the Den-Liner. Because Momo is an idiot.
Things start to change in the latter half of the show. While fighting a mole Imagin, Momotaros loses his connection to Ryoutarou. It soon becomes clear that when they’re in the past, the Imagin can no longer possess Ryoutarou and fight as Den-O. The Imagin band together and create a new way for Ryoutarou to fight, using a sword and a new form; Liner Form. They still don’t tell Ryoutarou what’s going on.
During episode 43, Ryoutarou starts questioning the Den-Liner Imagin about what’s happening, after a cryptic comment from an enemy. It’s revealed that the Imagin are slowly disappearing, but they tell Ryoutarou that they’re okay with that. Ryoutarou... does not take this well. During the next fight, he refuses to use his Imagin-powered finishing move. After the battle an enraged Momotaros asks him what the hell he’s doing and Ryoutarou responds by telling Momotaros that he won’t fight with the Imagin anymore. He even says his wish is for the Imagin to leave him alone. Momotaros is disgusted and tells him he won’t acknowledge a wish like that.
Their argument comes to a climax when the Den-Liner arrives at the Time Station, where all the Imagin can have a physical form even without hearing a wish. Momo goes off to sulk and later, when Ryoutarou is trying to go fight, Momotaros stops him. He tells Ryoutarou to just hit him once and throws him his sword. Otherwise, he won’t allow the boy to fight. Though Ryoutarou tries and tries, he can’t manage to land a single hit. He explains to Momotaros that he doesn’t want the Imagin to disappear - but he knows he must protect time as well. Having reached an understanding, Ryoutarou and Momotaros reconcile and go to save the other Taros, who are off fighting.
The final part of the series begins. They’re fighting against Kai, the sociopathic human that controls all Imagin. Both Kintaros and Urataros sacrifice themselves (or so they think, but they get rescued later) to hold off the enemy Imagins. Because of this, Ryoutarou finally asks Momotaros a wish; for Momotaros to keep fighting with Ryoutarou until the end. This wish, Momotaros accepts.
Ryoutarou and the others succeed in defeating Kai, but because of this all Imagin disappear. Ryoutarou is greatly saddened by this... Until it turns out that the Taros were just hiding behind a small hill. Thanks to Ryoutarou’s memory of them, they don’t fade.
Back on the Den-Liner, Ryoutarou gives Owner his pass. They all say goodbye to each other and Momotaros promises Ryoutarou that they will meet again.
Personality: Momotaros is very boisterous, first of all. He’s loud and often rude. He even makes up insulting nicknames for those he really dislikes. He’s not above hijacking Ryoutarou’s body to do what he pleases. While he eventually agrees to stop stealing, he doesn’t stop picking fights with whomever looks strong enough. Even when fighting evil Imagins, he continuously pesters Ryoutarou to let him fight as Sword Form and is very disappointed when one of the other forms is chosen.
Momotaros isn’t the brightest either. He often fails to shut up when his mouth could get him into trouble and prefers a brute force approach whenever possible. Also, he once mistook the pyramids for Mt. Fuji.
It’s very easy to dismiss Momotaros as just your average, aggressive, fight-happy idiot. But there’s a bit more to him than that. Though he acts otherwise, he does care about Ryoutarou and the other Imagin on Den-Liner. When they disappear around episode 28, he becomes solemn and doesn’t fight with his usual gusto.
He’s not fond of dishonesty either. This causes a clear rift between him and Urataros, who lies all the time, but that’s not all. When Ryoutarou trains by himself and becomes exhausted, the Taros all worry about him. When the truth comes out, they all forgive him soon enough... Except Momotaros. He even refuses to fight until Ryoutarou promises he won’t do it anymore. It’s clear he worries about the kid. There are several other times when Momotaros shows he cares more than he lets on.
Other: Momotaros is incredibly afraid of dogs. Even small ones. Even fake ones.

First Person (entry type):
Can someone tell me what’s wrong with getting into fights? Because I can’t see a problem with it! I was just trying to teach Ryoutarou how to handle himself, but that nosy woman gets on my case about it! At least I wasn’t using my teaching time to flirt, like that turtle bastard! And I didn’t even get the kid hurt, either, I was winning! There’s nothing wrong with proving you’re stronger than everyone else, right?! Gah... My legs are still sore from that punishment, too. She just made us sit there for hours. She’s the one that’s bad!
You guys agree, right? Of course you do! So how about you ducks tell me about the best fight you’ve ever been in? Gimme a good story to cheer me up!
Third Person:
They say you don’t know what you have until it’s gone.
Momotaros isn’t one for that sappy crap. That’s Ryoutarou’s area. Or maybe that perverted turtle, when he’s trying to impress a girl. The rest of them weren’t the type for the big existential questions. Why would they be? Nothing was going to change. Worst case scenario, another Imagin would be joining them, but they’d be able to handle that by now. As long as the newbie accepted Momotaros as the leader, of course.
Momotaros continued moving the metal sticks, trying to solve the puzzle. His coffee was getting cold, but he didn’t feel like drinking it. He tried his best to ignore the silence.
It hadn’t been this quiet for a long time. It seemed like an eon ago when it was just him as the only Imagin possessing Ryoutarou. Things were better, then. No turtles making up lies to get their way. No moronic bears, snoring away. No brats running around, leaving drawings everywhere.
No, this was fine with him. He didn’t really need the other Imagin. Ryoutarou didn’t need them either. Momotaros was perfectly capable of fighting on his own. This way he’d get to fight all the time! It was everything he’d wanted.
He was sure he’d feel happier later. He just... wasn’t used to this damned silence! It was starting to drive him crazy.
Suddenly the door to the compartment opened. Momotaros didn’t need to look up to know who it was. He didn’t need to look up to know what kind of look was on Ryoutarou’s face right now. It’s the same look Momotaros would have right now, if he was possessing Ryoutarou. Not that he would ever admit that.
“They’ve disappeared,” was all he said. He didn't really feel like saying more.
